The Art of Pottery and Ceramics

If you follow the Instagram page you may have seen the occasional share of pottery or ceramics. I enjoy seeing new designs for coffee mugs, but I have an old interest in ceramics and pottery that goes back to my early years in college. A friend of mine introduced me to the ceramics class at the community college I was attending. The class was not a sculpture class or really much of an artsy type of class. It was purely learning the art of throwing bowls, vases, and vessels on a wheel. I began to love creating all sorts of things in that class. The studio was open all day long and I ended up spending as much time outside of class as I could learning the skills to create vessels that were somewhat okay to look at. For me learning to throw pottery on a wheel was a very mechanical process that require skill, training, and practice. At the earliest of stages the most artistic and creative people still had to learn the basic mechanics of how to make each shape. I can’t say that I ever became an expert or even created anything phenomenal, but I do have several pieces around my house that we still use on a daily basis. I was at my parents house a couple months ago and found a few bowls, vessels, and cups sitting in storage. It was very nostalgic to find something that I completely forgot that I had created. I have come away with an appreciation and a love for pottery and ceramics.

I follow several different pages on Instagram that create incredible pottery. One that I have been following for a long time is @TortusCopenhagen. He is really popular on Instagram because he shares stunning process videos of him making vessels. His work is absolutely gorgeous and I have found myself watching the same video over and over because his videos, like the one below, are mesmerizing.

There are so many amazing people creating beautiful pottery and ceramics. Not all of them create incredible pieces using a wheel. @StudioLorier makes a series of mugs and bowls through a molding process. I would love to learn the process they use because the ideas are almost endless for what you could create.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one more incredible small business that creates remarkable ceramics called Matímañana. I have also shared them on Instagram a couple of times and even wrote a short post on them awhile back.

I am always on the lookout for more businesses, artists, and creators who make incredible pottery and ceramics. Tag me in your photos on Instagram.
